Rsv Infection

RSV infection is a contagious respiratory illness caused by respiratory syncytial virus, an enveloped virus that commonly affects the airways and can cause serious disease in vulnerable people. The virus attaches to and enters airway epithelial cells, replicates its RNA genome, and uses its fusion protein to spread between cells, producing inflammation, mucus, and sometimes syncytia that obstruct small airways. Studying RSV infection helps explain bronchiolitis and pneumonia, supports laboratory diagnosis and evaluation of antiviral treatments, and informs preventive strategies such as immunization and antibody-based protection. It also provides a model for investigating host responses to respiratory viruses.

Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

2023

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans. RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

2013

Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) can cause severe bronchiolitis in young infants. Part of the pathogenesis of severe HRSV disease is caused by the host immune response. Stimulation of primary human immune cells with HRSV provides a fast and reproducible model system to study activation of inflammatory pathways and infection.

The larva of the wax moth Galleria mellonella was recently established as an in vivo model to study Legionella pneumophila infection. Here, we demonstrate fundamental techniques to characterize the pathogenesis of Legionella in the larvae, including inoculation, measurement of bacterial virulence and replication as well as extraction and analysis of infected hemocytes.
