Ear Canal Positioning

Ear canal positioning is the deliberate alignment of the external auditory canal to provide a clear, safe view during clinical ear examination and procedures. Because the canal is curved, clinicians adjust the patient’s head and gently move the auricle to straighten its pathway; in adults, the auricle is generally drawn upward and backward, while in young children it is drawn downward and backward. Correct positioning improves visualization of the canal walls and tympanic membrane, supports accurate assessment of inflammation, obstruction, or injury, and helps reduce discomfort or accidental trauma during otoscopy, suctioning, and other ear-care procedures.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video describes the examination of the ear, beginning with a review of its surface and interior anatomy (Figure 1). The cartilaginous auricle consists of the helix, antihelix, earlobe, and tragus. The mastoid process is positioned just behind the earlobe. The slightly curving auditory canal ends at the tympanic membrane, which transmits sound...

In this study, we describe the posterior semicircular canal approach as a reliable method for inner ear gene delivery in neonatal mice. We show that gene delivery through the posterior semicircular canal is able to perfuse the entire inner ear.

Canalostomy for Local Drug Delivery into the Inner Ear of an Adult Mouse

This video showcases canalostomy, a procedure that allows local drug delivery into the inner ear of a mouse through the semicircular canal with minimal damage to hearing and vestibular function. This method enables the inoculation of viral vectors, pharmaceuticals, and small molecules into the mouse's inner ear.

(2019)This video demonstrates transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a noninvasive method for modulating brain activity. Electrodes are placed on the anterior wall of the outer ear canal and the tragus, targeting the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN). When stimulated, the resulting nerve impulse...

Capturing Flow-weighted Water and Suspended Particulates from Agricultural Canals During Drainage Events
