Volumetric Data

Volumetric data are three-dimensional measurements organized as voxels, or volume pixels, that represent the structure and properties of an object or specimen. In developmental biology, imaging systems such as confocal, light-sheet, or magnetic resonance microscopy collect optical sections that are computationally reconstructed into 3D volumes, then analyzed through segmentation, registration, and visualization. These datasets allow researchers to quantify embryo and organoid shape, cell position, tissue growth, and morphogenetic changes across space and time. By linking cellular behavior with tissue-scale organization, volumetric data support studies of development, disease modeling, lineage dynamics, and the effects of genetic or environmental perturbations.

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) injuries exceed endogenous regenerative ability, resulting in permanent functional deficits. Current VML research primarily focuses on limb and trunk muscles. To extend mechanistic studies of VML to craniofacial muscles, this article describes an in vivo method for longitudinal assessment of masseter muscle function pre- and post-VML injury.

Data Interpretation

2026

Research papers often present findings in the form of numerical tables, statistical outputs, and graphical representations. However, numerical results alone do not convey meaning unless researchers examine and place them in context. Data interpretation is the systematic process through which researchers transform raw information into clear, meaningful insights. It begins only after researchers have collected data through experiments, surveys, or observational studies. In their unprocessed form,...

How Data are Classified: Numerical Data

2023

Data that are countable or measurable in specific units are called numerical or quantitative data. Quantitative data are always numbers. Quantitative data are the result of counting or measuring the attributes of a population. Amount of money, pulse rate, weight, number of people living in a town, and number of students who opt for statistics are examples of quantitative data. Quantitative data may be either discrete or continuous. All quantitative data that take on only specific numerical...

2014

Lesion Explorer (LE) is a semi-automatic, image-processing pipeline developed to obtain regional brain tissue and subcortical hyperintensity lesion volumetrics from structural MRI of Alzheimer's disease and normal elderly. To ensure a high level of accuracy and reliability, the following is a video-guided, standardized protocol for LE's manual procedures.
