Aluminum Foam Production

Aluminum foam production is the fabrication of lightweight, porous aluminum materials that combine low density with high stiffness and energy-absorption capacity. The process typically introduces gas into molten aluminum through direct injection or chemical foaming agents, while particles or alloying additions stabilize the bubbles; controlled cooling then preserves the cellular structure as the metal solidifies. By adjusting pore size, density, and distribution, engineers can tailor aluminum foams for crash absorbers, lightweight structural panels, sound insulation, and thermal management components. Their combination of strength, low weight, and functional porosity supports more efficient designs in transportation, construction, and other advanced engineering applications.

Stress-Strain Characteristics of Aluminum

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Aluminum is one of the most abundant materials in our lives, as it is omnipresent in everything from soda cans to airplane components. Its widespread use is relatively recent (1900AD), primarily because aluminum does not occur in its free state, but rather in combination with oxygen and other elements, often in the form of Al2O3. Aluminum was originally obtained from bauxite mineral deposits...

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.

The tissue-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) is a key mediator of cell function. This article describes methods for synthesizing pure ECM-derived foams and microcarriers that are stable in culture without the need for chemical crosslinking for applications in advanced 3D in vitro cell culture models or as pro-regenerative bioscaffolds.
