Cross Laminated Timber

Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is an engineered wood product made from layers of solid-sawn lumber arranged in alternating directions and bonded under pressure to form large, rigid structural panels. This cross-layering distributes loads across two principal directions, improves dimensional stability, and allows panels to function as floors, roofs, walls, and diaphragms in engineered structures. In construction, CLT can replace or complement concrete and steel in selected building systems, supporting prefabrication, rapid assembly, and lightweight structural design while storing biogenic carbon in the wood. Its performance depends on material properties, connection design, moisture control, fire engineering, and applicable building standards.

Genetic Crosses

2023

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...

Making a Geologic Cross Section

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Geologic maps were first made and utilized in Europe, in the mid-to-late 18th century. Ever since, they have been an important part of geological investigations all around the world that strive to understand rock distributions on the surface of the earth, in the subsurface, and their modification through time. A modern geologic map is a data-rich representation of rocks and rock-structures in a two-dimensional plan view. The...

In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Rapid Testing of Resistance of Timber to Biodegradation by Marine Wood-Boring Crustaceans

This protocol presents a method for assessing the feeding rate of the wood-boring crustacean, Limnoria, by measuring faecal pellet production. This method is designed for use in non-specialist labs and has potential for incorporation into standard testing protocols, to evaluate enhanced wood durability under marine conditions.
