Reference Sphere

A reference sphere is a precisely manufactured and calibrated spherical artifact used as a geometric standard in measurement and engineering systems. Because its radius and surface form are known, a scanner, coordinate-measuring machine, or vision system samples the sphere and fits the measured points to a spherical model, calculating its center and comparing the result with the expected geometry. Multiple reference spheres can establish common coordinate frames, support registration of separate scans, and reveal errors in positioning, scale, or system calibration. These artifacts are important in dimensional metrology, 3D scanning, robotic calibration, and inspection, where geometric references improve measurement accuracy and repeatability.

2026

Citations play a key role in academic writing by documenting the evidence that supports scholarly claims. Beyond giving credit to original authors, they show engagement with existing research and strengthen the credibility of an argument. Effective citation practices are central to research literacy because they reflect a writer’s ability to locate, evaluate, and integrate reliable sources into their work. Digital Tools for Citation Management Advances in digital technology have simplified the...

Turbulence Sphere Method: Evaluating Wind Tunnel Flow Quality

2023

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA Wind tunnel tests are useful in the design of vehicles and structures that are subjected to airflow during their use. Wind tunnel data are generated by applying a controlled air flow to a model of the object being studied. The test model usually has a similar geometry but is a smaller scale compared to the full-sized object. To ensure accurate and useful data is collected...

Symbolic Understanding II: Displaced Reference

2026

Displaced reference is an important milestone in symbolic understanding that begins to emerge around 12 months of age. It is the ability to use words to refer to objects, people, or events that are not currently visible. This ability allows infants and toddlers to learn through communication even when objects or events are not directly present.Early DevelopmentBy approximately 12 to 13 months, infants may respond to the name of an absent familiar object by looking or pointing toward the place...

Implementation of a Reference Interferometer for Nanodetection

2014

A reference interferometer technique, which is designed to remove undesirable laser jitter noise for nanodetection, is utilized for probing an ultra-high quality factor microcavity. Instructions for assembly, setup, and data acquisition are provided, alongside the measurement process for specifying the cavity quality factor.

Generating 3D Co-culture Spheres of Astrocytes and Neurons to Induce Synapse Formation
