Sulfate Impurity Testing

Sulfate impurity testing is the analytical measurement of sulfate ions present as unwanted constituents in materials, chemicals, water, or industrial process streams. In a common turbidimetric method, the sample is dissolved or diluted, then treated with barium ions under controlled conditions so sulfate forms insoluble barium sulfate; the resulting turbidity is compared with standards or measured instrumentally to determine concentration. Engineering laboratories use this test to assess cement, aggregates, construction water, industrial fluids, and raw materials, because excessive sulfate can promote scaling, chemical degradation, or reduced material durability. Reliable results support quality control, specification compliance, corrosion management, and safer long-term system performance.

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University The glovebox provides a straightforward means to handle air- and moisture-sensitive solids and liquids. The glovebox is what it sounds like: a box with gloves attached to one or more sides, which allows the user to perform manipulations within the glovebox under an inert atmosphere. For manipulations under inert atmospheres, chemists can choose between Schlenk or high-vacuum techniques and a glovebox. Schlenk and...

In this video, we demonstrate a procedure for combined Alcian blue and silver staining of sulfated glycosaminoglycan oligosaccharide fragments. This combined staining technique significantly amplifies the bands of glycosaminoglycan polymers of different lengths in polyacrylamide gels.

Sulfate Attack on Concrete

2024

Sulfate attack on concrete is a deterioration process characterized by a whitish discoloration beginning at the edges and corners, accompanied by cracking and spalling. This phenomenon occurs when sulfates react with the components of hardened concrete, forming compounds like calcium sulfate and calcium sulfoaluminate which occupy more space than the substances they replace, causing the concrete to expand and disrupt. Sulfates from sources like soil, groundwater, or industrial effluents...

The objective of this protocol is to incorporate SDF-1α, a stem cell homing factor, into dextran sulfate-chitosan nanoparticles. The resultant particles are measured for their size and zeta potential, as well as the content, activity, and in vitro release rate of SDF-1α from the nanoparticles.
