Immune Response Transplantation

The immune response in transplantation is the set of host defenses that recognize and react to cells, tissues, or organs transferred from another individual, making it central to graft survival and transplant outcomes. Recipient T cells detect donor antigens, particularly differences in human leukocyte antigens, through direct and indirect allorecognition, activating cytokines, antibodies, and cytotoxic pathways that can cause graft rejection. Immunosuppressive therapies reduce these responses, while immune tolerance strategies aim to protect the graft without broadly weakening host defense. Understanding these mechanisms supports safer organ and tissue transplantation and informs research into rejection, infection risk, and long-term graft function.

Humoral Immune Responses

Overview The humoral immune response, also known as the antibody-mediated immune response, targets pathogens circulating in “humors,” or extracellular fluids, such as blood and lymph. Antibodies target invading pathogens for destruction via multiple defense mechanisms, including neutralization, opsonization, and activation of the complement system. Patients that are impaired in the production of antibodies suffer from severe and frequent infections by common pathogens and unusual pathogens. B...

Transplantation of Zebrafish Pediatric Brain Tumors into Immune-competent Hosts for Long-term Study of Tumor Cell Behavior and Drug Response

2017

The transplantation of cancer cells is an important tool for the identification of cancer mechanisms and therapeutic responses. Current techniques depend on immune-incompetent animals. Here, we describe a method to transplant zebrafish tumor cells into immune-competent embryos for the long-term analysis of tumor cell behavior and in vivo drug responses.

Here, we present a protocol for cell transplantation of zebrafish skeletal muscle and embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) into adult immune compromised rag2E450fs homozygous mutant zebrafish. This protocol allows for the efficient analysis of regeneration and malignant transformation of muscle cells.
