Nasal Symptom Score

The Nasal Symptom Score is a standardized clinical measure that quantifies the severity of nasal symptoms, making subjective complaints easier to record and compare. Patients or clinicians assign numerical ratings to predefined symptoms over a specified period, and the individual ratings are combined into a composite score that reflects overall nasal burden. In immunology and infection research, this measure helps characterize inflammatory or infectious respiratory illness, establish symptom severity at baseline, and track changes during treatment or recovery. It also provides a practical outcome measure for comparing patient groups and evaluating interventions in clinical studies.

The unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) protocol is a validated method for studying behavioral and physiological changes associated with chronic stress and depressive symptoms. Eight weeks of imposition of the UCMS protocol induces behavioral changes and poor health outcomes in rodents of either gender.

Culturing of Human Nasal Epithelial Cells at the Air Liquid Interface

Nasal epithelial cells, obtained through superficial scrape biopsy of human volunteers, are expanded and transferred onto tissue culture inserts. Upon reaching confluency, cells are grown at air liquid interface, yielding cultures of ciliated and non-ciliated cells. Differentiated nasal epithelial cell cultures provide viable experimental models for studying the respiratory mucosa.
