Animal Transplantation Model

An animal transplantation model is a living experimental system used to study how transplanted cells, tissues, or organs function within a recipient and why grafts succeed or fail. Researchers transfer donor material into genetically matched or mismatched animals, then monitor immune recognition, inflammation, vascular integration, graft survival, and tissue repair under controlled conditions. These models help clarify rejection mechanisms and evaluate immunosuppressive therapies, surgical procedures, preservation methods, and emerging transplantation strategies before clinical testing. By linking molecular and physiological responses with measurable outcomes, animal transplantation models support research in medicine while also highlighting biological differences that must be considered when translating findings to human patients.

The murine cervical heart transplantation model is well suited for immunological as well as ischemia reperfusion injury studies. We modified the procedure using a non-suture cuff technique and performed more than 1,000 successful transplants with this approach. Herein, we provide additional details of this technique to supplement the video.
