Aortic Pressure Measurement

Aortic pressure measurement is the determination of blood pressure within the aorta, providing a direct indicator of central hemodynamic function and cardiac workload. In clinical and research settings, a catheter placed in the aorta can transmit pulsatile pressure to a calibrated transducer, which records systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressures as well as the arterial waveform. These measurements help assess cardiovascular performance, characterize hypertension and aortic valve disease, and guide care during cardiac procedures. They also support investigations of vascular resistance, pressure transmission, and the effects of drugs or mechanical interventions on circulation.

A cyclic pressure bioreactor capable of subjecting heart valve tissue to physiological and pathological pressure conditions has been designed. A LabVIEW program allows users to control pressure magnitude, amplitude and frequency. This device can be used to study the mechanobiology of heart valve tissue or isolated cells.

2023

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

2023

This video describes a technique of measuring the interstitial fluid pressure within a tumor by perfusion imaging using an image-guided robotic system. Measurements are compared to the intra-tumoral accumulation of liposomes, within a solid tumor.

Ascending Aortic Constriction in Rats for Creation of Pressure Overload Cardiac Hypertrophy Model

We describe a stepwise procedure for creating pressure overload and left ventricular hypertrophy in Wistar rats by constriction of the ascending aorta using a small metallic clip. This model is extensively used for studying remodeling changes during cardiac hypertrophy and for identifying and evaluating strategies for regression of such changes.
