Crossed Phrenic Pathway

The crossed phrenic pathway is a latent neural route that can transmit respiratory drive from brainstem networks to phrenic motor neurons on the opposite side of the spinal cord, helping preserve diaphragm function after unilateral injury. Normally weak or functionally silent, it can be recruited when the main descending pathway is interrupted; respiratory signals cross the spinal cord and activate phrenic motoneurons through spinal interneuronal connections, reflecting neural plasticity. In medicine and respiratory neuroscience, studying this pathway clarifies breathing recovery after cervical spinal cord injury and supports development of rehabilitation and neuromodulation strategies aimed at restoring respiratory function.

Functional and Morphological Assessment of Diaphragm Innervation by Phrenic Motor Neurons

Compound muscle action potential recording quantitatively assesses functional diaphragm innervation by phrenic motor neurons. Whole-mount diaphragm immunohistochemistry assesses morphological innervation at individual neuromuscular junctions. The goal of this protocol is to demonstrate how these two powerful methodologies can be used in various rodent models of spinal cord disease.

Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potentials by Stimulating the Phrenic Nerve in a Rat

2025

This video describes recording compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) in diaphragm muscle fibers in a rat through phrenic nerve stimulation. A high-intensity electric pulse stimulation of the phrenic nerve generates action potentials in the diaphragm muscle fibers, which are observed by obtaining the response curve.

Genetic Crosses

2023

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...

Here, we describe a protocol for identifying phrenic motor neurons in mice after intrapleural delivery of fluorophore conjugated cholera toxin subunit beta. Two techniques are compared to inject the pleural cavity: transdiaphragmatic versus transthoracic approaches.

Making a Geologic Cross Section

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder Geologic maps were first made and utilized in Europe, in the mid-to-late 18th century. Ever since, they have been an important part of geological investigations all around the world that strive to understand rock distributions on the surface of the earth, in the subsurface, and their modification through time. A modern geologic map is a data-rich representation of rocks and rock-structures in a two-dimensional plan view. The...
