Electrical Impedance Technique

Electrical impedance technique is a measurement method that determines how strongly a material, including biological tissue, opposes the flow of an applied electrical current. In medicine, electrodes deliver a small alternating current and measure the resulting voltage, allowing impedance to be calculated from the tissue’s conductivity, capacitance, and structural properties; changes in frequency can distinguish responses from different tissue components. This approach supports noninvasive assessment of body composition, fluid distribution, tissue status, and physiological activity, with applications in monitoring hydration, respiration, cardiac function, and disease-related changes. Its portability and lack of ionizing radiation make it useful for clinical monitoring and point-of-care research.

The electrode-tissue interface of neural recording electrodes can be characterized with electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Application of voltage biasing changes the electrochemical properties of the electrode-tissue interface and can improve recording capability. Voltage biasing, EIS, CV, and neural recordings are complementary.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Electrical resistance is the ability of an electrical circuit element to resist the flow of electricity. Resistance is defined by Ohm's Law: (Equation 1) Where is the voltage and is the current. Ohm's law is useful for determining the resistance of ideal resistors. However, many circuit elements are more complex and can't be described by...
