Intraperitoneal Treatment

Intraperitoneal treatment is a medical approach that delivers a therapeutic agent directly into the peritoneal cavity, the space surrounding many abdominal organs. The treatment bathes the peritoneal surfaces, allowing drugs or other agents to act locally and, depending on their properties, cross the peritoneal lining for absorption into the circulation. Clinicians use this route when targeted exposure within the abdomen may improve treatment of conditions such as peritoneal infection, fluid accumulation, or cancers involving the abdominal lining. Its effectiveness depends on drug distribution, dwell time, tissue penetration, and the patient’s clinical condition, making administration and monitoring essential.

Source: Martinez, E., et al. Intracranial Pharmacotherapy and Pain Assays in Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the intracranial administration of an analgesic drug in an anesthetized rat with a pre-implanted guide cannula in the prefrontal cortex. An additional analgesic drug is co-administered intraperitoneally. Following recovery, the rat’s thermal pain response is assessed using Hargreave’s apparatus, where paw withdrawal latency is measured to evaluate the analgesic...
