Jackson Cross Cylinder

The Jackson Cross Cylinder is an ophthalmic instrument used to refine spectacle prescriptions by detecting small errors in cylindrical lens power and axis during subjective refraction. It combines two equal-strength cylindrical lenses of opposite sign, allowing the examiner to rapidly flip the handle so each lens orientation is presented in turn; the patient compares the resulting images, and the preferred view guides adjustments to astigmatic correction. Used with a visual acuity chart and controlled testing conditions, this method improves refractive precision and helps distinguish whether residual blur arises from cylinder axis or power. It remains a foundational technique in clinical optometry and ophthalmic examination.

Classical forelimb asymmetry analysis of the cylinder test is routinely used to assess behavioural deficits in rats following brain injury or stroke; however, it fails to detect consistent deficits in mice. This study demonstrates that quantifying paw-dragging behaviour is a more sensitive analysis of brain injury in mice.

Cylinders in Three-Dimensional Space

2026

A cylindrical surface is generated when a two-dimensional profile curve is translated along a straight line in three-dimensional space. The translated copies of the curve form a surface composed of parallel rulings, each oriented in the same fixed direction. This construction allows many three-dimensional forms to be described using relatively simple planar equations. In Cartesian coordinates, a cylindrical surface is often recognized by an equation that omits one of the three variables. For...

In Vitro Evaluation of The Effects Of Er,Cr:YSGG and Diode Lasers Used on Titanium Cylinder

In this study, Er,Cr:YSGG and diode lasers applied separately to the flat surface of a total of 96 specially designed titanium cylinders. A thermocouple placed on the other surface and the temperature was measured. Surface roughness analyzed by profilometer, SEM and AFM.

A Novel Approach to Assess Motor Outcome of Deep Brain Stimulation Effects in the Hemiparkinsonian Rat: Staircase and Cylinder Test

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment option for Parkinson's disease. We established a study design to screen novel stimulation paradigms in rats. The protocol describes the use of the staircase test and cylinder test for motor outcome assessment in DBS treated hemiparkinsonian rats.

Genetic Crosses

2023

To dissect genetic processes or create organisms with novel suites of traits, scientists can perform genetic crosses, or the purposeful mating of two organisms. The recombination of parental genetic material in the offspring allows researchers to deduce the functions, interactions, and locations of genes. This video will examine how genetic crosses were influential in developing Mendel's three laws of inheritance, which form the basis of our understanding of genetics. One genetic crossing...
