Myocardial Pericardial Ratio

The myocardial pericardial ratio is a quantitative cardiac imaging measure that compares the size or measured property of the heart muscle with that of the surrounding pericardium, helping characterize structural relationships in the heart. It is calculated by obtaining standardized measurements from corresponding myocardial and pericardial regions and expressing one value relative to the other, with interpretation influenced by imaging modality, location, and measurement conditions. In medicine, this ratio can support assessment of myocardial or pericardial thickening, distinguish cardiac structural abnormalities, and complement clinical findings in conditions involving inflammation, infiltration, or remodeling. Consistent measurement may also improve comparison across examinations and aid research on cardiac disease progression.

The post-mortem assessment of myocardial infarction (MI) in rodents is based on quantification of the infarct on stained heart sections. We describe an accurate method to quantify the infarct size using systematic sampling of harvested rat hearts from base to apex and image analyses of trichrome-stained histological sections.
