Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that delivers repeated magnetic pulses through the scalp to influence brain activity, making it an important treatment and research tool in medicine. Each pulse generates a brief electric current in cortical tissue, while the frequency, intensity, and timing of stimulation can produce lasting changes in neuronal excitability and activity within connected networks. Clinicians use rTMS most prominently for treatment-resistant depression, and researchers are evaluating its role in other neuropsychiatric and neurological conditions. Its targeted delivery without surgical implantation supports individualized protocols and ongoing investigation of therapeutic mechanisms.

This study is designed to test the hypothesis that neuronavigational system-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation has higher accuracy for targeting the intended target as demonstrated by eliciting a greater degree of virtual aphasia in healthy subjects, measured by delay in reaction time to picture naming.

Modulating Cortical Excitability in a Rat Using Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Source: Beom, J., et al. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to the Unilateral Hemisphere of Rat Brain. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in anesthetized rats to modulate cortical excitability. The procedure involves determining the motor threshold (MT) to establish baseline stimulation, followed by applying rTMS at an intensity above the MT to induce neuronal depolarization. This stimulation triggers...

We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the unilateral hemisphere of rat brain, by placing a 25-mm figure-8 coil 1 cm lateral to the vertex on the biauricular line and angulating the coil by 45°. An in-house water cooling system was used for rTMS for more than 20 min.

(2017)This video demonstrates a non-invasive method to assess changes in corticomotoneuronal transmission in humans following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The study introduces an electrophysiological technique that differentiates fast, direct corticospinal pathways from polysynaptic connections.
