Cortical Silent Period

The cortical silent period is a brief interruption of voluntary muscle activity following stimulation of the motor cortex, providing a measurable index of cortical inhibition in neuroscience. During transcranial magnetic stimulation, a magnetic pulse activates corticospinal pathways and inhibitory interneurons, temporarily suppressing electromyographic activity in a contracting target muscle; the interval is often influenced by GABAergic mechanisms and stimulation intensity. Researchers use cortical silent period duration to assess motor-circuit function, study inhibitory processing, and evaluate changes associated with neurological disorders, medications, learning, and rehabilitation. Its noninvasive measurement supports investigations of how the brain regulates movement and adapts after injury.

Measuring the Contralateral Silent Period Induced by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for measuring the contralateral silent period (cSP) using transcranial magnetic stimulation. Position the patient's hand prone and place an electrode on the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle. Then, place a force-measuring device between the thumb and index finger. Identify the primary motor cortex (M1) region of the brain. Maintain a standardized pressure on the force-measuring device and stimulate the M1 region to record the muscle activity, termed the...

Glutamatergic synapses can switch from an active mode to a silent mode. We demonstrate that presynaptic activity status in dissociated culture of rodent neurons is visualized using a fixable form of the FM1-43 dye to visualize active synapses and immunostaining with vGluT-1 antibody to visualize all glutamate synapses.

Periodic Classification of the Elements

The periodic table arranges atoms based on increasing atomic number so that elements with the same chemical properties recur periodically. When their electron configurations are added to the table, a periodic recurrence of similar electron configurations in the outer shells of these elements is observed. Because they are in the outer shells of an atom, valence electrons play the most important role in chemical reactions. The outer electrons have the highest energy of the electrons in an atom...

Periodicity Concept

2025

The periodicity concept, also known as the time-period assumption, is a fundamental accounting principle that allows a business's indefinite life to be segmented into specific, uniform intervals for financial reporting. These intervals, typically defined as months, quarters, or fiscal years, form the basis for preparing timely and comparable financial statements. The application of this concept enables stakeholders to monitor financial performance, assess trends, and make informed decisions...
