Intracranial Electroencephalography

Intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) records the brain’s electrical activity directly from electrodes placed on the cortical surface or within brain tissue, providing high-resolution measurements that complement scalp EEG. The electrodes detect voltage changes produced by synchronized neuronal activity, while their precise placement captures signals from targeted regions with strong temporal and spatial detail. In neuroscience, iEEG supports epilepsy evaluation by identifying seizure onset zones and helps map language, sensory, and motor functions before surgery. Researchers also use these recordings to study neural circuits, cognition, and pathological brain activity, advancing both fundamental research and personalized neurosurgical care.

2016

High Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have emerged as presurgical biomarkers for the identification of the epileptogenic zone in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. A methodology for the noninvasive recording, detection, and localization of HFOs with simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented.

Source: Liou, C. et al. Intracerebroventricular Delivery of Gut-Derived Microbial Metabolites in Freely Moving Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2022).This video demonstrates the intracranial injection of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in a freely moving mouse to study their effects on brain-mediated behavior. An injector cannula is inserted into a guide cannula implanted in the mouse brain. After recovery, the mouse acclimates in a novel cage. SCFAs are then administered, and locomotor behavior is recorded.

Source: Shafi, M. M., et al. A Multimodal Imaging- and Stimulation-based Method of Evaluating Connectivity-related Brain Excitability in Patients with Epilepsy. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)The video demonstrates the procedure for using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG) to assess neuronal excitability in patients with epilepsy. It details the steps for aligning the patient’s head with a pre-recorded brain scan, positioning the TMS coil over a functionally connected...

A novel technique to record the pressures within the skull is described. The minimally invasive method uses a fibre-optic pressure sensing system to accurately measure intracranial pressure (ICP) in anaesthetized rats without causing significant brain trauma. The technique may be used in a wide range of experimental models.
