Karl Pearson

Karl Pearson was an English mathematician and statistician whose work helped establish statistics as a mathematical discipline and shaped how researchers quantify relationships in data. His best-known contribution, the Pearson correlation coefficient, standardizes covariance by the product of two variables’ standard deviations to indicate the strength and direction of linear association; he also developed foundational methods involving frequency distributions, moments, and chi-square analysis. These tools support data interpretation across biology, social science, and other fields, while Pearson’s legacy also illustrates the importance of distinguishing statistical association from causation and evaluating methods within their historical context.

Microsoft Excel: Pearson's Correlation

2025

Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool for statistical analysis, including calculating Pearson's correlation coefficient, which measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two continuous variables. Pearson's correlation coefficient, often denoted as "r," ranges from -1 to 1. A value close to 1 indicates a strong positive correlation, meaning as one variable increases, the other does too. A value close to -1 indicates a strong negative correlation, implying that as one...

2014

Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.

Here we report common methods to analyze the phagocytic function of murine alveolar macrophages and bacterial clearance from the lung. These methods study in vitro phagocytosis of fluorescein isothiocyanate beads and in vivo phagocytosis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Green Fluorescent Protein. We also describe a method for clearing P. aeruginosa in mice.
