Muscles of the Thorax

Los músculos intercostales torácicos profundos y el diafragma son cruciales para la respiración.
El diafragma es una estructura muscular en forma de cúpula que separa la cavidad torácica de la cavidad abdominopélvica.
Se origina en la parte inferior de la caja torácica y las vértebras lumbares y se inserta en el tendón central.

Thorax muscles help breathing and support movement in the upper body. They also help keep the chest stable. Together, these muscles make the rib cage move while the lungs fill and empty.

The diaphragm is the main breathing muscle in the thorax. It is a wide, dome-shaped muscle that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. It starts below the rib cage and lumbar vertebrae and attaches to the central tendon. When it contracts, it flattens and moves downward. This increases the space in the thoracic cavity and draws air into the lungs. During exhalation, it relaxes and returns to its dome shape, which helps push air out.

The rib cage also contains eleven pairs of intercostal muscles. These muscles are arranged in three groups: external, internal, and innermost. The external intercostals run from the lower edge of one rib to the upper edge of the rib below it. They are most active during inhalation, when they lift the ribs and expand the chest cavity. The internal intercostals have the opposite fiber direction and attachment pattern. They mainly help with forced exhalation by pulling the ribs downward and inward. The innermost intercostals are often treated as part of the internal layer, and they also help compress the rib cage during exhalation.

The thorax also contains the pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, serratus anterior, and subclavius. These muscles help move the shoulder and upper limb. They also help stabilize the shoulder girdle. In this way, thoracic muscles work with the breathing muscles to support both respiration and upper body posture.
