Albumin Reuptake

Albumin reuptake is the receptor-mediated retrieval of filtered albumin from tubular fluid, a process that preserves protein balance and reflects healthy kidney function. After glomerular filtration, proximal tubule epithelial cells bind albumin at the brush border through the megalin-cubilin receptor system and internalize it by endocytosis; endosomal trafficking then directs the protein toward lysosomal degradation and returns its components to the cell. In bioengineering, albumin reuptake provides a functional readout for kidney organoids, renal tissue models, and kidney-on-a-chip platforms. Measuring this pathway helps evaluate epithelial transport, investigate proteinuria, and assess drug-related tubular injury.

In this study, we present an easy and efficient procedure for evaluating the disruption of the blood-brain barrier under neurodegenerative conditions. To achieve our objective, we infused high molecular weight fluorescein isothiocyanate labelled (FITC)-albumin into mouse jugular vein and evaluated its leakage into the brain parenchyma by fluorescence microscopy.

Modeling Fast-scan Cyclic Voltammetry Data from Electrically Stimulated Dopamine Neurotransmission Data Using QNsim1.0

Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry can monitor in vivo dopamine neurotransmission in the context of drugs, disease, and other experimental manipulations. This work describes the implementation of QNsim1.0, a software to model electrically stimulated dopamine responses according to the quantitative neurobiological model to quantify estimates of dopamine release and reuptake dynamics.

The Synapse

2019

Neurons communicate with one another by passing on their electrical signals to other neurons. A synapse is the location where two neurons meet to exchange signals. At the synapse, the neuron that sends the signal is called the presynaptic cell, while the neuron that receives the message is called the postsynaptic cell. Note that most neurons can be both presynaptic and postsynaptic, as they both transmit and receive information. An electrical synapse is one type of synapse in which the pre-...

The Forced Swim Test as a Model of Depressive-like Behavior

This protocol describes the forced swim test, which is used for the study of depressive-like behavior in rodents. This procedure involves placing an animal in a container filled with water that eventually will lead to the exhibition of immobility behavior, which is considered to reflect behavioral despair.
