Bioanalyzer

A Bioanalyzer is a microfluidic instrument that rapidly assesses the size, concentration, and integrity of DNA, RNA, and proteins, making it useful for quality control in bioengineering research. It separates biomolecules by electrophoresis within disposable lab-on-a-chip systems, then detects fluorescently labeled fragments to generate an electropherogram and quality metrics such as RNA integrity. Researchers use Bioanalyzer analysis to evaluate nucleic acids before sequencing, polymerase chain reaction, gene expression studies, and other molecular workflows. By identifying degradation, contamination, or insufficient sample quality early, the technique improves experimental reliability and helps guide decisions in diagnostics, synthetic biology, and biomaterials research.

Assessment of Glutamine as a Fuel Source for Alveolar Macrophages Exposed to Chronic Ethanol Using an Extracellular Flux Bioanalyzer

2024

Alcohol misuse impairs alveolar macrophage (AM) immunity due to suppressed mitochondrial respiration and bioenergetics. We recently demonstrated that ethanol (EtOH) exposure increases glutamine dependency for mitochondrial respiration in AMs. Herein, methods are provided to determine the usage of glutamine for mitochondrial respiration in EtOH-treated AMs using an extracellular flux bioanalyzer.

Here, ribosomal spacer PCR (RS-PCR) is used together with a miniaturized electrophoresis system as a fast and high resolution method for genotyping S. aureus at moderate costs allowing a high throughput.

Assessing Mitochondrial Function in Cerebral Vascular Endothelial Cells

2025

This video demonstrates the assessment of the mitochondrial functioning of cerebral vascular endothelial (CVE) cells using an extracellular flux assay. CVE cells are plated in an extracellular flux cell culture plate. Extracellular flux sensors are hydrated before loading and calibration into the bioanalyzer. The plate containing cells is then loaded for analysis.
