Biocompatibility Enhancement

Biocompatibility enhancement is the improvement of a material’s ability to function safely in contact with living tissues, cells, or biological fluids, a central goal in bioengineering. It typically works by modifying a material’s surface chemistry, roughness, wettability, or coating to control protein adsorption, reduce inflammatory or immune reactions, and promote appropriate cell adhesion and growth. These strategies can improve the performance and safety of medical implants, biosensors, drug-delivery systems, and tissue-engineering scaffolds. By aligning material properties with biological responses, biocompatibility enhancement supports longer device function, better tissue integration, and more reliable clinical outcomes.

This study presents a methodology to prepare 3D, biodegradable, foam-like cell scaffolds based on biocompatible side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). Confocal microscopy experiments show that foam-like LCEs allow for cell attachment, proliferation, and the spontaneous alignment of C2C12s myoblasts.

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

2020

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Methionine Functionalized Biocompatible Block Copolymers for Targeted Plasmid DNA Delivery

This work presents the preparation of methionine functionalized biocompatible block copolymers (mBG) via the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) method. The plasmid DNA complexing ability of the obtained mBG and their transfection efficiency were also investigated. The RAFT method is very beneficial for polymerizing monomers containing special functional groups.

Design of a Biocompatible Drug-Eluting Tracheal Stent in Mice with Laryngotracheal Stenosis

Laryngotracheal stenosis results from pathologic scar deposition that critically narrows the tracheal airway and lacks effective medical therapies. Using a PLLA-PCL (70% poly-L-lactide and 30% polycaprolactone) stent as a local drug delivery system, potential therapies aimed at decreasing scar proliferation in the trachea can be studied.
