Anesthetized Male Mouse

An anesthetized male mouse is a laboratory animal placed under controlled anesthesia for procedures that require immobility, reduced awareness, or minimized pain, making it a standardized model for cancer research. Anesthetic agents depress central nervous system activity, while careful monitoring helps maintain respiration, circulation, body temperature, and other physiological conditions during the experiment. This model supports tumor implantation, imaging, biopsy, surgery, drug administration, and tissue collection while limiting movement-related variability. Because biological responses can differ by sex, studies using male mice also help investigate sex-specific influences on tumor growth, treatment response, and disease mechanisms, with appropriate attention to animal welfare and recovery.

Enriching for Males: Maintaining a Stock of Male C. elegans

Nematodes can be propagated easily in the lab--in part because hermaphrodites can reproduce by self-fertilization. However, genetic crosses and other experiments may require a large number of males. This video describes a method to enrich for male C. elegans.

Source: Slezia, A. et al. Electrophoretic Delivery of γ-aminobutyric Acid (GABA) into Epileptic Focus Prevents Seizures in Mice. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates the electrophoretic delivery of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) to inhibit seizure activity in an anesthetized mouse. It outlines the steps involved in probe implantation, neural activity recording, seizure induction, and controlled GABA delivery via a microfluidic ion pump to assess its therapeutic efficacy.

Extracting Prostate from Mouse Urogenital System: A Technique to Separate Prostate Gland from Other Urinary and Genital System Organs in Male Mouse

Here, we describe the immunoprecipitation of ribosomes and associated RNA from select populations of adult male mouse germ cells using the RiboTag system. Strategic breeding and careful immunoprecipitation result in clean, reproducible results that inform on the germ cell translatome and provide insight into the mechanisms of mutant phenotypes.

Source: Joseph Donroe, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT While its usefulness in cancer screening is debated, the male rectal examination remains an important part of the physical exam. The exam is indicated in selected patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary and/or fecal incontinence or retention, back pain, anorectal symptoms, abdominal complaints, trauma patients, unexplained anemia, weight loss, or bone pain.
