Preclinical Drug Testing

Preclinical drug testing is the evaluation of a candidate medicine before human trials to determine whether it shows sufficient efficacy, safety, and biological activity to advance toward clinical development. In cancer research, scientists test compounds in cultured tumor cells, organoids, and animal models, measuring effects on tumor growth alongside pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and dose response. These studies help reveal how a treatment acts on cancer biology, identify potential safety risks, and guide selection of an effective dosing strategy. Although preclinical results cannot predict every clinical outcome, they provide essential evidence for prioritizing candidates and designing first-in-human studies.
