Molecular Process Discovery

Molecular process discovery is the systematic identification and characterization of the molecular events that drive biological functions, from gene regulation and DNA replication to RNA processing and protein activity. In genetics, it combines genomic and transcriptomic measurements with computational analysis and targeted perturbations to connect sequence variation or gene expression changes to specific cellular mechanisms. Researchers use these approaches to map regulatory pathways, identify disease-associated mechanisms, and test how mutations alter molecular function. Such findings improve interpretation of genetic data and support predictive models, diagnostic strategies, and potential therapeutic targets.

The preparing and processing of dried blood spots (DBS) for their final analysis are still poorly standardized for most diagnostic applications. To overcome this shortcoming, a comprehensive step-by-step protocol is suggested and subsequently evaluated with regard to its effectiveness for detecting markers of viral infections.

2013

Human endogenous retroviruses (HERV), which occupy 8% of the human genome, retain scarce coding capacities but a hundred thousand long terminal repeats (LTRs). A custom Affymetrix microarray was designed to identify individual HERV locus expression and was used on prostate cancer tissues as a proof of concept for future clinical studies.
