Choroid Removal

Choroid removal, or choroidectomy, is the surgical excision of part or all of the choroid, the blood vessel-rich layer between the retina and sclera, and it matters because this tissue supports the outer retina and can contain ocular disease. During the procedure, microsurgical instruments separate and remove targeted choroidal tissue while surgeons aim to preserve adjacent retinal and scleral structures when possible. Choroid removal is used in selected cases, including localized choroidal tumors, and the excised tissue can support pathological diagnosis. Its effects on vision and eye function depend on the lesion’s location, the extent of removal, and involvement of neighboring tissues.

The human retina is composed of functionally and molecularly distinct regions, including the fovea, macula, and peripheral retina. Here, we describe a method using punch biopsies and manual removal of tissue layers from a human eye to dissect and collect these distinct retinal regions for downstream proteomic analysis.

Choroid Sprouting Assay to Study Ocular Microvascular Proliferation Ex Vivo

This video demonstrates the development of an ex vivo model of choroidal sprouting to study ocular microvascular angiogenesis. The assay involves culturing mouse eye explants containing the choroid tissue attached to the sclera and retinal pigment epithelium under specific conditions that promote choroidal microvascular sprouting.
