Hyperglycemia Management

Hyperglycemia management is the coordinated use of monitoring, lifestyle measures, and therapies to control elevated blood glucose and reduce the risk of acute and long-term complications. It works by identifying glucose patterns through blood glucose or continuous glucose monitoring, then adjusting nutrition, physical activity, insulin, or other glucose-lowering medicines to improve glycemic control while avoiding hypoglycemia. In medicine, management is tailored to the cause and severity of hyperglycemia, including diabetes type, comorbidities, and treatment goals. Prompt recognition and treatment of severe elevations can help prevent emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state, while sustained control supports protection of the cardiovascular, renal, neurologic, and ocular systems.

This work describes methods to establish acute and chronic hyperglycemia models in zebrafish. The aim is to investigate the impact of hyperglycemia on physiological processes, such as constitutive and injury-induced neurogenesis. The work also highlights the use of zebrafish to follow radiolabeled molecules (here, [18F]-FDG) using PET/CT.

Hyperglycemia is an abnormally high blood glucose level. It is diagnosed by fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL, 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (or OGTT) ≥200 mg/dL, random glucose ≥200 mg/dL with symptoms, or HbA1c ≥6.5%. However, HbA1c results may be unreliable in certain conditions, such as anemia or hemoglobinopathies, and the diagnosis should be confirmed unless classic symptoms are present. Postprandial hyperglycemia is typically considered significant when glucose levels exceed 180 mg/dL two...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Breeding management supports the 3Rs by minimizing unnecessary animal production and ensuring that only the number of animals required for a study is generated. Effective breeding strategies help reduce surplus animals and...
