Myocardial Oxygenation Reserve

Myocardial oxygenation reserve describes the capacity of heart muscle to increase oxygen delivery and maintain tissue oxygenation when cardiac workload rises, relative to rest. During stress, increased metabolic demand triggers coronary vasodilation and greater myocardial blood flow; because resting myocardium already extracts substantial oxygen, this reserve depends largely on expanding coronary perfusion rather than markedly increasing oxygen extraction. Stress-based physiological and imaging methods can assess this reserve and identify impaired coronary vasodilator function. In medicine, the concept supports evaluation of coronary artery disease, coronary microvascular dysfunction, and treatment-related changes, linking vascular physiology with myocardial health and patient risk.

Isolated working heart models can be used to measure the effect of loading conditions, heart rate, and medications on myocardial performance and oxygen consumption. We describe methods for preparation of a rodent left heart working model that permits study of systolic and diastolic performance and oxygen consumption under various conditions.

Coronary flow reserve (CFR), is defined as the ratio of maximal coronary blood flow to the resting coronary blood flow. We present a protocol for evaluating CFR in rats via ultrasound, which offers the opportunity to predict cardiovascular risk factors in the absence of obstructive coronary disease.

The present protocol describes a modified parasternal long-axis view for swift and precise localization of the left anterior descending artery. This approach is designed to be simpler and more user-friendly while facilitating the examination of dynamic changes in coronary flow reserve following myocardial ischemia-reperfusion in mice.

Excess Reserves

Excess reserves, while often viewed as idle funds from a lending perspective, play a vital role in ensuring financial stability and managing risk—particularly during periods of economic uncertainty or regulatory change.Strategic Value Beyond LiquidityExcess reserves are not merely a liquidity buffer; they represent a deliberate strategic decision by banks. When economic conditions are stable, lending typically yields higher returns. However, during periods of financial volatility or increased...

The Federal Reserve plays a key role in clearing interbank payments. One important function of the Fed is clearing interbank payments. When banks transfer funds among themselves, the Fed acts as an intermediary to ensure that these transactions are settled smoothly. Commercial banks maintain accounts at the Federal Reserve, known as master accounts. These accounts hold the reserves that banks use to make payments to one another. When one bank needs to transfer money to another, it sends an...
