Non-invasive Mri

Non-invasive MRI is a medical imaging technique that produces detailed pictures of internal tissues and organs without surgical entry or exposure to ionizing radiation. It uses a strong magnetic field to align hydrogen nuclei in the body, radiofrequency pulses to alter their energy states, and magnetic field gradients to spatially encode the signals released as the nuclei return to equilibrium. By adjusting pulse sequences, clinicians can emphasize differences among soft tissues and assess anatomy, blood flow, or disease-related changes. Non-invasive MRI supports diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring in fields such as neurology, oncology, cardiology, and musculoskeletal medicine.

Non-invasive Monitoring and Imaging in Animal Research

2026

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Non-invasive technologies support the principles of 3Rs by enabling repeated data collection from the same animal without the need for euthanasia at multiple time points. These approaches reduce the number of animals required...

Early detection of apoptosis may identify at-risk cell populations in a variety of diseases. Here we demonstrate a method to link an early apoptosis-detection protein (Annexin V) to a MRI-detectable iron oxide nanoparticle (SPIO). This method may be extended to other proteins of interest to generate MRI-detectable molecular imaging probes.

The production of hyperpolarized xenon by means of spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) is described. This method yields a ~10000-fold enhancement of the nuclear spin polarization of Xe-129 and has applications in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging. Examples of gas phase and solution state experiments are given.
