Postoperative Adhesion Formation

Postoperative adhesion formation is the development of fibrous bands between tissues or organs after surgery, where healing surfaces that normally remain separate become abnormally connected. These adhesions arise when surgical injury triggers inflammation and fibrin deposition; if fibrinolysis does not remove the fibrin scaffold, fibroblasts deposit collagen and organize the connection. In medicine, understanding this process supports strategies such as gentle tissue handling, minimizing inflammation, and using physical barriers or other preventive measures, because adhesions can cause chronic pain, infertility, intestinal obstruction, and technical difficulty during later operations.

Adhesion

Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules. Capillary action is a result of water’s adhesive tendencies. When a narrow glass...

This flow adhesion assay provides a simple, high impact model of T cell-epithelial cell interactions. A syringe pump is used to generate shear stress, and confocal microscopy captures images for quantification. The goal of these studies is to effectively quantify T cell adhesion using flow conditions.

This protocol describes the stimulation of cultured fibroblasts with low-intensity pulsed ultrasound, which drives focal adhesion formation and Rac1 activation by mimicking engagement of the transmembrane matrix receptor, syndecan-4. This approach allows investigation of a successful clinical technique at the cellular level, thereby providing opportunities for refinement of the therapy.
