Sputter Coater

A sputter coater is a vacuum-based instrument that deposits a thin, uniform layer of material onto a surface, improving its electrical conductivity, stability, or imaging performance. Inside the chamber, a low-pressure inert gas such as argon forms a plasma; positively charged ions strike a solid target, ejecting atoms that travel through the vacuum and condense on the specimen. In medicine and biomedical research, sputter coating prepares nonconductive biological samples for scanning electron microscopy and can modify medical-device surfaces with functional coatings. Control of coating thickness, target material, and deposition conditions helps preserve surface features and supports reliable characterization.

Improving Thermoelectric Properties of Bi2Te3 Thin Films By Manganese Co-Sputtering

2026

A radiofrequency co-sputtering protocol was developed to fabricate manganese-doped Bi2Te3 thin films and evaluate how manganese input influences structural and thermoelectric transport properties. Moderate manganese incorporation improved film uniformity and power-factor-related transport behavior, while higher manganese input increased structural disorder and resistivity.

2013

A method to prepare epitaxial layers of ordered alloys by sputtering is described. The B2-ordered FeRh compound is used as an example, as it displays a metamagnetic transition that depends sensitively on the degree of chemical order and the exact composition of the alloy.

Characterization of Surface Modifications by White Light Interferometry: Applications in Ion Sputtering, Laser Ablation, and Tribology Experiments

White light microscope interferometry is an optical, noncontact and quick method for measuring the topography of surfaces. It is shown how the method can be applied toward mechanical wear analysis, where wear scars on tribological test samples are analyzed; and in materials science to determine ion beam sputtering or laser ablation volumes and depths.
