In Vivo Expression

In vivo expression is the production of a gene-derived RNA or protein within a living organism, rather than in isolated cells or a cell-free system. It occurs when a gene is transcribed and translated in target tissue, often after genetic material is delivered or an endogenous regulatory sequence is activated; promoters and other control elements influence where, when, and how strongly expression occurs. In neuroscience, researchers use in vivo expression to label neural populations, monitor cellular activity, alter gene function, and study circuit organization in intact nervous systems. These approaches connect molecular changes with behavior, physiology, and disease mechanisms.

2008

The hair follicle is a highly complex appendage of the skin containing a multiplicity of cell types. The follicle undergoes constant cycling through the life of the organism including growth and resorption with growth dependent on specific stem cells. The targeting of the follicle by genes and stem cells to change its properties, in particular, the nature of the hair shaft is, discussed. Hair follicle delivery systems are described, such as liposomes and viral vectors for gene therapy. The...

2025

This video showcases the in vivo bacterial burden measurement using Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, BCG, lux-infected insect larvae. The process involves larval homogenization, treatment with a luciferase substrate, and bioluminescence measurement to determine relative light units that correlate with bacterial burden.

Ex vivo ERG can be used to record electrical activity of retinal cells directly from isolated intact retinas of animals or humans. We demonstrate here how common in vivo ERG systems can be adapted for ex vivo ERG recordings in order to dissect the electrical activity of retinal cells.
