Polymer Matrix Gel

Polymer matrix gel is a hydrated, three-dimensional network of crosslinked polymers that provides structural support and a tunable environment for cells, making it valuable for modeling biological tissues. Its polymer chains form a porous matrix that retains water, permits diffusion of nutrients and signaling molecules, and can be engineered to vary in stiffness, composition, and degradation rate. In neuroscience, these gels support neuronal and glial cultures, guide neurite extension, and help researchers study how extracellular matrix properties influence cell behavior. They also provide platforms for investigating neural development, injury responses, drug effects, and tissue-engineering strategies.

The word polymer is derived from the Greek words “poly” which means “many” and “mer” which means “parts”. Polymers are long chains of molecules composed of repeating units of smaller molecules, known as monomers. They either occur naturally, such as DNA and proteins, or can be constructed synthetically, like plastics. They have varied structural characteristics, such as linear chains, branched chains, or complex networks, that contribute to the properties that they exhibit. Additionally,...

Zymography Gel Electrophoresis: An Electrophoretic Technique to Detect Matrix Metalloproteinases by Assessing the Enzymatic Activity

This video demonstrates the zymography gel electrophoresis technique to assess the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) present in cell culture supernatant. The active MMPs degrade the MMP-specific substrate embedded in a polyacrylamide gel, which appears as clear bands against a dark stained background following staining.
