Social Isolation Rodents

Social isolation in rodents is an experimental paradigm in which mice or rats are housed alone for defined periods to examine how reduced social contact affects brain and behavior. During isolation, the lack of social cues and enrichment can modify stress responses, social motivation, and neural circuit function through experience-dependent changes in neurotransmission and gene regulation. Neuroscience studies use this model to investigate mechanisms underlying anxiety, depression-like behavior, cognitive deficits, and vulnerability to psychiatric disorders. Findings can clarify how social experience shapes brain development and may guide interventions for isolation-related dysfunction.

Modeling Social Stress

2023

Stress negatively affects our quality of life. In particular, some individuals experience social stress when placed in a social environment that they are unfamiliar with or have difficulty adjusting to. Since it is hard to examine mechanisms of social stress in humans, modeling this condition in animals may help scientist in developing new therapies for treating this commonly encountered problem. This science education video begins by discussing the known anatomy and physiology behind stress...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Environmental enrichment involves objects and practices that encourage natural behaviors, improve psychological well-being, and promote better welfare in laboratory rodents. Environmental enrichment should be tailored to the...
