Behavioral Tasks

Behavioral tasks are structured activities used to measure how people perceive, learn, decide, respond, and interact under defined conditions, making them essential tools in psychological research and assessment. Researchers manipulate instructions, stimuli, rewards, or social contexts and record outcomes such as accuracy, reaction time, choices, or observable actions to connect behavior with underlying cognitive and emotional processes. In psychology, behavioral tasks support the study of attention, memory, motivation, decision-making, and social behavior, while also helping evaluate developmental changes, individual differences, and responses to interventions. Standardized task design and reproducible measurements strengthen comparisons across participants and studies.

We present a behavioral chamber designed to assess cognitive performance. We provide data showing that once acquired, zebrafish remember the task 8 weeks later. We also show that hyperglycemic zebrafish have altered cognitive performance, indicating that this paradigm is applicable to studies assessing cognition and memory.

Intra-Operative Behavioral Tasks in Awake Humans Undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery

Deep brain stimulation surgery offers a unique opportunity to examine information encoding in the awake human brain. This article will describe intra-operative methods used to perform cognitive and behavioral tasks while simultaneously acquiring physiological data such as EMG, single-unit neuronal activity and/or local field potentials.

2013

We demonstrate how an objective measure can be employed in the widely employed rubber hand illusion paradigm. This measure is obtained by modifying the well-established crossmodal congruency task. This task allows the investigation of multisensory processes which are critical for modulations of body representations as in the rubber hand illusion.

Behavioral Tasks for Examining Identity Recognition In Mice

2025

By pairing negatively or positively valenced experiences with individual social targets, we developed behavior tasks for examining the identity recognition of C57BL/6 mice. These tasks allow for the study of mechanisms of social memory of individual social targets in healthy and disease-related mouse models with impaired social cognition.

Patients implanted with intracranial electrodes provide a unique opportunity to record neurological data from multiple areas of the brain while the patient performs behavioral tasks. Here, we present a method of recording from implanted patients that can be reproducible at other institutions with access to this patient population.
