Dot Estimation Task

The Dot Estimation Task is a psychological assessment in which participants estimate the number of dots presented in a visual array, providing a simple way to study numerical perception and quantity representation. On each trial, observers rapidly judge numerosity without counting every item, drawing on precise subitizing for small sets and the approximate number system for larger sets; visual features such as dot size, spacing, and overall area can also influence responses. Researchers use this task to investigate numerical cognition, perceptual bias, developmental differences, and individual variation in quantity estimation across children and adults.

Quantitative Dot Blot to Estimate Target Proteins in a Tissue Lysate

2025

This video demonstrates a quantitative dot blot, or QDB, technique for the absolute quantification of proteins of interest in a tissue sample. The proteins in the sample are immobilized on the nitrocellulose membrane inside the wells of a QDB plate. Utilizing target protein-specific antibodies labeled with a peroxidase enzyme, a chemiluminescent substrate is oxidized to produce light, which is measured to determine the protein concentration of the sample.

Estimate the Cognitive Load Using Electrocardiographic Measure: A Human-AI Collaborative Task

This protocol describes the use of physiological indicators to measure variations in cognitive load across different task difficulty levels in human-AI collaborative tasks. The findings suggest that people adapt their decision-making processes according to task difficulty, thereby reflecting different levels of cognitive load.

Piaget's Conservation Task and the Influence of Task Demands

2023

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Jean Piaget was a pioneer in the field of developmental psychology, and his theory of cognitive development is one of the most well-known psychological theories. At the heart of Piaget’s theory is the idea that children’s ways of thinking change over the course of childhood. Piaget provided evidence for these changes by comparing how children of different ages responded to questions and problems that he...

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

Dot Product

The dot product is an essential concept in mathematics and physics. In engineering, the dot product of any two vectors is the product of the magnitudes of the vectors and the cosine of the angle between them. It is denoted by a dot symbol between the two vectors. Consider a vehicle pulling an object along the ground using a rope. If the rope makes an angle with the horizontal axis, the work done can be calculated using the dot product of the force applied and the object's displacement. The dot...
