Muscles of the Abdomen

La paroi autour de la cavité abdominale peut être divisée en régions antérolatérales et postérieures.
Les parois de la région antérolatérale comprennent cinq muscles appariés. Ils sont classés en groupes latéraux et antérieurs.
En partant de la surface et en allant vers l’intérieur, le groupe latéral a trois muscles plats : l’oblique externe, l’oblique interne et le transverse de l’abdomen.
Les muscles obliques internes sont perpendiculaires sous les muscles obliques externes superficiels, tandis que le muscle transverse de l’abdomen s’étend principalement transversalement autour de la paroi abdominale.
Les aponévroses de ces muscles s’entrelacent, formant la linea alba, une bande verticale de tissu conjonctif fibreux allant du sternum à la symphyse pubienne.
Les muscles antérieurs - le droit de l’abdomen et le pyramidal - sont positionnés bilatéralement à la linea alba.
La paroi abdominale postérieure se trouve entre les dernières vertèbres thoraciques et lombaires. Ses muscles appariés comprennent le carré des lombes, le psoas majeur et l’iliaque.

Les muscles obliques internes sont perpendiculaires aux muscles obliques externes superficiels, tandis que le muscle transverse de l'abdomen s'étend principalement transversalement autour de la paroi abdominale. Les aponévroses de ces muscles s'entrelacent et forment la linea alba, une bande fibreuse de tissu conjonctif s'étendant verticalement du processus xiphoïde du sternum à la symphyse pubienne.

Les muscles antérieurs, en particulier le droit de l'abdomen et le pyramidal, sont positionnés bilatéralement par rapport à la ligne blanche. Le muscle droit de l'abdomen, long et plat, s'étend du sternum et des côtes jusqu'à l'os pubien. Juste sous la partie inférieure du droit de l'abdomen se trouve la pyramidale, un petit muscle souvent variable que tout le monde ne possède pas. Lorsqu'il est présent, il est situé devant le droit de l'abdomen et s'attache à l'os pubien et à la ligne blanche.

Région postérieure

La paroi abdominale postérieure est située entre les dernières vertèbres thoraciques et lombaires et est constituée de paires de muscles, notamment le carré des lombes, le psoas majeur, le psoas mineur et l'iliaque. Le quadratus lumborum est situé profondément dans le bas du dos, de chaque côté de la colonne lombaire. Il s’agit d’un muscle stabilisateur clé qui s’étend de la crête iliaque jusqu’aux côtes inférieures et aux vertèbres lombaires, aidant à maintenir une posture verticale. Le psoas majeur est un muscle fusiforme qui s'étend des côtés des vertèbres lombaires jusqu'au petit trochanter du fémur. Il travaille en étroite collaboration avec l'iliaque, un muscle en forme d'éventail qui fusionne avec le grand psoas pour former le muscle psoas-iliaque. Enfin, le psoas mineur, présent chez seulement environ la moitié de la population, est parallèle au psoas majeur mais est un muscle beaucoup plus petit et plus fin. Lorsqu'il est présent, il aide à fléchir le bassin et la colonne vertébrale.

The abdominal wall muscles support the abdominal cavity and help protect the internal organs. This flexible wall is bordered by the xiphoid process and costal margins at the top, the vertebral column at the back, and the pelvic bones and inguinal ligament at the bottom. It is divided into the anterolateral region and the posterior region.

The anterolateral region includes five paired muscles in two groups. The lateral group contains the external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis muscles. The internal oblique runs perpendicular to the more superficial external oblique, and the transversus abdominis wraps mainly across the abdominal wall.

The aponeuroses, or flat tendon-like sheets, of these muscles join together to form the linea alba. This is a vertical band of connective tissue that extends from the xiphoid process of the sternum to the pubic symphysis. The anterior muscles are the rectus abdominis and the pyramidalis. They lie on either side of the linea alba.

The rectus abdominis is a long, flat muscle that extends from the sternum and ribs to the pubic bone. Beneath its lower part lies the pyramidalis. This small muscle is variable, so it is not present in everyone. When it is present, it sits in front of the rectus abdominis and attaches to the pubic bone and linea alba.

The posterior abdominal wall lies between the last thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. It includes the quadratus lumborum, psoas major, psoas minor, and iliacus muscles. The quadratus lumborum is deep in the lower back on both sides of the lumbar spine and helps stabilize posture. It extends from the iliac crest to the lower ribs and lumbar vertebrae.

The psoas major is a fusiform, or spindle-shaped, muscle that runs from the sides of the lumbar vertebrae to the lesser trochanter of the femur. It works with the iliacus, a fan-shaped muscle, and together they form the iliopsoas muscle. The psoas minor runs parallel to the psoas major, but it is smaller and thinner. It is present in only about half of the population and, when present, helps flex the pelvis and spine.
