Type Ii Cells

Type II cells are specialized alveolar epithelial cells in the lung that maintain air-sac function and support efficient gas exchange. They synthesize, store, and secrete pulmonary surfactant, a lipid- and protein-rich material that lowers surface tension and helps prevent alveolar collapse; after injury, they can also proliferate and contribute to epithelial repair. In bioengineering, Type II cells are incorporated into lung organoids, engineered tissue models, and microfluidic respiratory systems to study development, injury, fibrosis, and drug responses. Their surfactant production and regenerative capacity make them important targets for modeling lung function and designing future regenerative therapies.

T Cell Types and Functions

When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Meanwhile, T cells with CD8 markers differentiate into effector cytotoxic T cells. The differentiation of CD4 T cells into helper T cell subsets, such as Th1, Th2, and Th17 cells, is dependent on the antigen type, antigen-presenting cell, and regulatory cytokines. Th1 cells stimulate dendritic cells to express necessary co-stimulatory molecules on their surfaces for...
