Non-specific Binding Correction

Non-specific Binding Correction is an analytical strategy that accounts for signal produced when assay components interact with unintended surfaces, molecules, or support materials rather than the target. It typically measures background binding with a reference or control condition, then subtracts or models that contribution from the total response, often alongside blocking or surface-passivation steps. In bioengineering, this correction improves the accuracy of biosensors, affinity assays, immunoassays, and surface-based measurements by separating specific recognition from nonspecific adsorption. Reliable correction supports more precise estimates of binding, reduces false-positive interpretations, and strengthens comparisons among biomaterials, engineered interfaces, and assay designs.

Distance Corrections

2025

To achieve precise distance measurements, especially in surveying and construction, certain corrections must be applied to account for potential sources of error like the standardization errors, temperature variations, and slope adjustments.Standardization error emerges when measurement equipment undergoes changes, such as wear, repairs, or weather impacts. To address this, surveyors compare the equipment’s readings to a standard. This process identifies any deviation that might lead to...

The Equilibrium Binding Constant and Binding Strength

2020

The equilibrium binding constant (Kb) quantifies the strength of a protein-ligand interaction. Kb can be calculated as follows when the reaction is at equilibrium: where P and L are the unbound protein and ligand, respectively, and PL is the protein-ligand complex. As the amount of bound ligand is also related to the rate of ligand binding, experiments can also determine Kb by examining the rates of protein-ligand association (kon) and dissociation (koff) using the following ratio: Thus,...

Here we present two protocols, one for measuring the specific growth rate and the other for the cell-binding ability of rotavirus using the plaque assay and RT-qPCR. These protocols are available for confirming the differences in phenotypes between rotavirus strains.

Power Factor Correction

The power transmission to a factory involves the transfer of apparent power, a combination of active and reactive power. The power factor measures how effectively electrical power is converted into useful work output. The ratio of the real power (KW) that does the work to the apparent power (KVA) supplied to the circuit. A poor power factor means the inductive electrical load absorbs more reactive power, causing a low lagging power factor. This results in large voltage drops across the load...
