Heart Regeneration

Heart regeneration is the biological restoration of damaged heart muscle, a process that could improve recovery after myocardial injury and reduce heart failure. It depends on coordinated repair mechanisms, including cardiomyocyte proliferation, activation of progenitor or stem cells, formation of new blood vessels, and remodeling of the extracellular matrix. While some animals and newborn mammals regenerate cardiac tissue more effectively, adult human hearts have limited regenerative capacity. Research in biology examines these differences to guide regenerative medicine, including cell-based therapies, tissue engineering, and treatments designed to stimulate endogenous repair and restore contractile function.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...
