Lineage Tearing

Lineage tearing is a developmental phenomenon in which cells descended from a common progenitor become separated or redistributed as tissues form, causing clonal ancestry and final tissue position to diverge. It occurs when coordinated cell divisions, migration, intercalation, or other morphogenetic movements reorganize neighboring cells while lineage relationships remain intact, allowing cells with shared ancestry to contribute to distinct regions or fates. Recognizing lineage tearing helps biologists interpret fate maps and lineage-tracing data, distinguish spatial proximity from true common origin, and analyze tissue patterning during embryogenesis, regeneration, and disease. This framework links cell behavior to organ formation and the emergence of complex tissues.

Lineage Commitment

2023

Commitment is the process whereby stem cells: lose their ability to form all cell types and irreversibly change into a specific type. The multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, (HSCs), differentiate into the multipotent hematopoietic progenitor cells, (HPCs). The HPCs express many lineage-specific cytokine receptors. Each of these receptors binds specific cytokines, activates distinct signaling pathways, and expresses a particular gene set. The HPCs further differentiate to form committed...

Capsulorhexis is an important step in phacoemulsification surgery. A surgeon creates a continous curvilinear tear on the anterior lens capsule by controlling the tearing vector forces. A peripherally extended tear is a serious complication. This video demonstrates a novel technique of rescuing capsular radial tear out using a cystotome.
