Obturator Use

Obturator use refers to the clinical application of a prosthetic device that closes an opening between the oral and nasal cavities or other areas affected by tissue loss. The obturator fits against the defect, restoring separation between these spaces and supporting speech, swallowing, mastication, and control of nasal air or fluid leakage. Clinicians use obturators for patients with cleft palate, maxillary defects, trauma, or surgical resection, including temporary devices during healing and definitive prostheses for longer-term rehabilitation. Proper design, fitting, and follow-up can improve oral function, communication, nutrition, comfort, and quality of life while supporting individualized treatment planning.

Open Cricothyrotomy

2023

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Open cricothyrotomy is an emergent surgical procedure. It is performed to establish an airway access by passage of a tube through an incision in the cricothyroid membrane. This is a procedure of choice in the feared "can't intubate, can't ventilate" scenario - when all other forms of endotracheal intubation have failed and the spontaneous ventilation is worsening or has become impossible. The...

Microinjection-Based Delivery of a Therapeutic Agent into an Awake Rodent Brain

Source: Poland, R. et al. Rodent Brain Microinjection to Study Molecular Substrates of Motivated Behavior. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)In this video, a water-filled microinjection setup consisting of a syringe and microinjector tubing is used for precise drug delivery. A rat with a pre-implanted guide cannula undergoes targeted brain microinjection, enabling accurate administration of therapeutic agents in awake animals with minimal tissue damage.

2015

Rodents are an appropriate model to investigate the molecular substrates of behavior and complex psychiatric disorders. Brain microinjection in awake rodents can be used to elucidate disease substrates. An efficient and customizable brain microinjection method as well as the execution of an operant paradigm that quantifies motivation is presented.
