Manual Bedside Method

Manual bedside methods are clinician-performed procedures used at the point of care to assess patients, obtain specimens, or generate immediate clinical information without relying entirely on automated instruments. They work through structured observation and physical examination, direct measurement, and hands-on processing of samples or simple diagnostic tests under controlled conditions. In immunology and infection, these methods can support recognition of inflammatory signs, guide specimen collection, and inform early decisions about further testing or treatment. Although laboratory techniques provide greater analytical depth, bedside approaches remain valuable for rapid assessment, resource-limited settings, and connecting clinical findings with immune and infectious disease processes.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Rabbits possess powerful hindlimb musculature and are susceptible to spinal injury if they struggle or kick while inadequately supported. Because rabbits vary in temperament and may struggle during restraint, handlers should...
