Transcanal Dissection

Transcanal dissection is a surgical technique that reaches the middle ear through the external auditory canal, providing a direct route for otologic procedures. The surgeon works along the ear canal, elevates a tympanomeatal flap, and carefully separates tissue to expose the tympanic membrane, ossicles, or other middle-ear structures while protecting nearby delicate anatomy. This approach supports procedures such as tympanic membrane repair, ossicular reconstruction, and selected treatment of middle-ear disease, while helping trainees understand surgical anatomy, instrument handling, visualization, and tissue preservation.
