Larval Brain

The larval brain is the developing nervous system of an immature animal, where neural circuits begin organizing the sensory, motor, and behavioral functions required for survival. Its neurons communicate through electrical impulses and chemical synapses, while genetic programs and environmental inputs shape cell differentiation, connectivity, and circuit activity during development. Because larval organisms are often small, transparent, and experimentally accessible, researchers can observe brain structure and neural activity in living animals. Studying the larval brain therefore supports investigations of neurodevelopment, sensory processing, locomotion, behavior, and neurological disease, while revealing how functional circuits emerge from developing neural networks.

Drosophila Larval IHC

2023

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a technique used to visualize the presence and location of proteins within tissues. Drosophila larvae are particularly amenable to IHC because of the ease with which they can be processed for staining. Additionally, the larvae are transparent, meaning that some tissues can be visualized without the need for dissection. In IHC, proteins are ultimately detected with antibodies that specifically bind to “epitopes” within the protein of interest. In order to preserve...

We present a protocol to isolate neurons, macrophages and microglia from larval zebrafish brains under physiological and pathological conditions. Upon isolation, RNA is extracted from these cells to analyze their gene expression profile. This protocol allows for the collection of high-quality RNA for performing downstream analysis like qPCR and transcriptomics.
