Motion Tracking Software

Motion tracking software is a computational tool that detects, records, and quantifies movement in videos or sensor data, turning visual behavior into analyzable measurements. It typically identifies features such as body parts, objects, or markers, follows their positions across successive frames, and converts those coordinates into trajectories, speed, distance, or other kinematic variables. In neuroscience, researchers use these measurements to relate locomotion, reaching, posture, or other behaviors to neural activity, sensory conditions, injury, or treatment. Automated tracking can improve measurement consistency and reveal subtle behavioral changes, supporting studies of motor control, brain function, disease models, and the effects of neural interventions.

Locomotor activity (LMA) is a simple and easily performed measurement of behavior in mice. Coupling of video tracking software (VTS) and LMA allows for the improvement of specificity and sensitivity, especially when compared with the manual, line crossing method of LMA analysis. Additionally VTS allows long-term tracking of mouse LMA.

Using Eye-tracking to Assess the Relative Importance of Visual and Vestibular Input to Subcortical Motion Processing in the Roll Plane

2025

The methodology explored visual and vestibular contributions to gaze stabilization during optokinetic and whole-body rotations. Stimulations were carried out through visual, vestibular, and visuovestibular trials. Torsional eye-movement gain and nystagmus frequencies served as indicators for the subcortical relay of sensory-specific motion information towards the reflexive brainstem response for each trial.

The current study aimed to automate the quantification of motor deficits in rats. The initial evaluation model assesses motor loss resulting from an intracortical microelectrode implantation in the motor cortex. We report on the development and use of a tracking algorithm using easily adaptable, simple, and readily available coding software.

Source: Andrew Duffy, PhD, Department of Physics, Boston University, Boston, MA This experiment examines at various situations involving two interacting objects. First, the experiment examines the forces that two objects apply to one another while they collide. The objects are wheeled carts that have variable masses. The purpose of this experiment is to discover when the force the first cart exerts on the other is the same magnitude as the force the second cart exerts back on the first, as well...
