Bovine Tail Disc

The bovine tail disc is an intervertebral disc from the caudal vertebrae of cattle, widely used as an accessible model for studying disc structure, mechanics, degeneration, and repair. It contains a gelatinous nucleus pulposus surrounded by a layered annulus fibrosus and interfaces with vertebral endplates, allowing researchers to examine how extracellular matrix composition and mechanical loading influence tissue behavior. In bioengineering, bovine tail discs support the evaluation of biomaterials, engineered tissues, cell-based therapies, and organ culture systems under controlled conditions. Findings from these models can guide the development of regenerative strategies and improve understanding of human intervertebral disc disease.
