Peripheral Neurons

Peripheral neurons are nerve cells located outside the brain and spinal cord that transmit sensory, motor, and autonomic signals throughout the body. Their axons carry electrical impulses between peripheral tissues and the central nervous system, while Schwann cells support axon function and can assist repair after injury. In bioengineering, researchers study peripheral neurons to design nerve guidance conduits, biomaterials, electrical interfaces, and tissue-engineered grafts that promote axon regeneration and functional reconnection. These approaches support the development of prosthetic technologies, treatments for peripheral nerve damage, and laboratory models for evaluating neural repair strategies.

In this video-article we present a method for isolating single or multiple Drosophila da neurons from third instar larvae using the infrared capture (IR) class of Laser Capture Microdissection (LCM). RNA obtained from the isolated neurons can be readily used for downstream applications including qRT-PCR or microarray analyses.

The dendritic arborization sensory neurons of the Drosophila larval peripheral nervous system are useful models to elucidate both general and neuron class-specific mechanisms of neuron differentiation. We present a practical guide to generate and analyze dendritic arborization neuron genetic mosaics.

Dorsal root ganglia (DRG) are structures containing the sensory neurons of the peripheral nervous system. When dissociated, they can be co-cultured with SC-like adipose-derived stem cells (ASC), providing a valuable model to study in vitro nerve regeneration and myelination, mimicking the in vivo environment at the injury site.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA Placement of an intravenous (IV) catheter is one of the key procedures in medicine. The IV catheter allows patients to receive critical medications, including pain medicine, insulin, antibiotics, blood products, and fluids for rehydration. Additionally, placing an IV catheter allows for blood samples to be obtained, which can be sent to the laboratory for testing and...
